Chapter 1 – Genesis of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
- Ideology
- French Revolution was the first time “ideology” was used. It combines the Greek word for idea, “eidos,” with “logos,” the study of. Most commonly, it refers to a system of ideas that explains how things are and how they should be. Thus, communism is an ideology and so is capitalism.
- The implication is that other systems of belief are more rational or empirical in nature, but this is seldom true. All systems of belief are ideological to some extent; all involve making connections between events based not on direct experience but on indirect observation and inference.
- The term “ideology” has become a curse in intellectual circles. It’s always preceded by a dismissive adjective: “mere ideology,” “vulgar ideology,” “childish ideology.” To be called an ideologue is to be accused of being blinded by faith, of ignoring the lessons of history, of refusing to see the world as it really is.
- In a famous essay published four decades ago, the Stanford political theorist Kenneth Minogue argued that the idea of ideology is itself ideological.
- He saw it as part of a grand narrative in which modern intellectuals, finding themselves unable to believe in the truth or progress, decided that the real goal was not to discover truth but to change the world.
