History

The University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain and the world’s oldest continuously operating university. It was founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX and established as a Studium Generale, or general studies center. It was originally intended to provide education for clergymen, but soon became a more general venue for studying theology and philosophy.

In 1340, the university became the first institution to teach law in Europe; this trend continued until 1714 when it ceased teaching law because there were no longer enough students to support it financially.

The school also established an important tradition with its medical program, which started around 1450 when King John II granted two professorships so that they could teach medicine at the school; these positions were filled by two Spanish physicians from North Africa named Ibn Abi Usaybi’a and Muhammad ibn Jafar al-Jayyani (also known as “Jafar I”). The pair received royal funding for their research projects as well as stipends to cover their travel expenses whenever they visited other European universities where they gave lectures about their own findings on subjects like anatomy
