Chapter 1 – Active Voice And Passive Voice

This Chapter 1 notes have:

  • Active Voice
  • A strong, active voice is the most important tool of effective writing. By naming the actor in the sentence, active voice eliminates confusion. Readers know who is doing what. Consider this sentence:
  • Here’s the same sentence revised with an active voice:
  • By accident, I made key lime pie for the first time.
  • The revised sentence is more concise and much clearer than the original.
  • The ball was thrown by me sounds more formal than I threw the ball. However, at times it may be clearer to write in the passive voice: The window was broken by the child (which implies that we do not know who broke it).
  • Other verbs [called state of being verbs] can also serve as linking verbs depending on their use in a sentence. These become linking verbs when they connect the subject of a sentence to a word describing that subject,or when the subject of the sentence performs the action. The Passive Voice is when the subject receives the action, or in other words, has something done to it.
  • Compared to Passive Voice, which is generally wordier because it must include a form of “to be” along with a past participle.
  • Passive Voice
  • Present Indefinite Tense
