  • What is Psychology
  • The official definition of psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Therefore psychology is both a science and an academic discipline, that is, it involves the collection of data through scientific methods and the presentation of that information through the academic publishing process. Psychology encompasses many sub-disciplines such as social psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, evolutionary psychology and forensic psychology. Most psychologists specialize in one or two areas of interest.
  • Psychology has been recognized as an independent academic discipline since 1879 when Wilhelm Wundt opened a psychology laboratory at Leipzig University. There have been numerous schools of thought since then about how best to explain human behavior and thinking. The two major schools of thought are known as psychodynamic theory and behaviorism.
  • The psychodynamic approach to psychology was developed by Sigmund Freud at the end of the 19th century and emphasizes unconscious processes like hidden conflicts or motivations as the key to understanding human behavior. Modern variants include psychoanalysis (a clinical method for treating psychopathology by the use of dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst) as well as attachment theory (which describes the dynamics of long-term relationships between humans).

What is Psychology and What Do Psychologists Do?

Psychology is the science of behavior and mind. Psychology is an emerging subject in the field of health sciences.

With the advancement in imaging technologies, there is a specific focus on diseases of the brain and their treatment.

Previously these disorders and patients suffering from these disorders were treated very harshly and no attention was given to their treatment but now people have started to recognize mental illness as the same as physical illness and hence approach to these disorders has dramatically improved.

Furthermore, there is renewed focus towards different addictions and their remedies.

Hence psychologists have gained immense importance during the last decade or so.

Psychologists are doctors or therapists who are involved in the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and counseling of patients suffering from mental health disorders.

These disorders include schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder etc. You can enter this field by two means. One way is to pursue an MBBS degree and after that completing specialization (FCPS) in Psychiatric Medicine.

The difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is that psychiatrist have the permission to prescribe drugs used for the treatment of mental disorders whereas a clinical psychologist is more involved with behavioral therapy and does not enjoy the privilege of prescribing medicines.
