- What is Psychology
- The official definition of psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Therefore psychology is both a science and an academic discipline, that is, it involves the collection of data through scientific methods and the presentation of that information through the academic publishing process. Psychology encompasses many sub-disciplines such as social psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, evolutionary psychology and forensic psychology. Most psychologists specialize in one or two areas of interest.
- Psychology has been recognized as an independent academic discipline since 1879 when Wilhelm Wundt opened a psychology laboratory at Leipzig University. There have been numerous schools of thought since then about how best to explain human behavior and thinking. The two major schools of thought are known as psychodynamic theory and behaviorism.
- The psychodynamic approach to psychology was developed by Sigmund Freud at the end of the 19th century and emphasizes unconscious processes like hidden conflicts or motivations as the key to understanding human behavior. Modern variants include psychoanalysis (a clinical method for treating psychopathology by the use of dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst) as well as attachment theory (which describes the dynamics of long-term relationships between humans).
